GameSpot's Game Of The Year 2020 | Half-Life: Alyx

تم نشره في 2020/12/17
Half-Life: Alyx is an incredible blend of the best VR concepts with expert execution, and it paints the storied franchise in a whole new light. There's just nothing like it.
It wasn't easy choosing our Game of the Year here at GameSpot, especially considering the roster of incredible games that came out this year, many of which affected us profoundly. You can see in our list of the 10 best games of 2020 that each had a special place in the hearts and minds of the GameSpot staff. After hours of deliberations, though, we can only choose one, and we came to the conclusion to award our Game of the Year to the one that stood out the most, which is Half-Life: Alyx.
In the video above, Kurt Indovina is joined by Jake Dekker and Michael Higham to sort through our thoughts and feelings about Half-Life: Alyx and discuss what made it such an incredible and innovative game. Part of that involves the seamless marriage of several VR concepts that are integrated and expertly executed to create a superb gameplay experience. Whether it was intense firefights or terrifying encounters, the level of immersion is unmatched in Half-Life: Alyx They also discuss the wild implications that the game poses for the Half-Life universe, how the impact of its narrative twists and turns are amplified by VR, and why its conclusion such a powerful thing (without spoilers).
We didn't ignore the question of accessibility, both physical and financial. VR poses some inherent barriers to entry, which unfortunately means some may not be able to experience Half-Life: Alyx, or at least not yet. However, we acknowledge the lengths Valve went to to accommodate some limitations--you can play the whole game seated, or with one controller, or even if you have limited playing space. Several other options for movement, crouching, and interaction can also help mitigate potential issues. While the game can't cover every limitation, it represents significant progress being made in VR.
Half-Life: Alyx is a top-notch gaming experience on its own merits, and the feeling we had when we essentially forgot we were playing a VR game is testament to its magnificent level design and gameplay mechanics, and the various ways it challenges you with puzzles and combat encounters. It's also the fact that Half-Life's best qualities shine like never before in VR, where the nuances in the environments and interactions within the world speak volumes to its world design and storytelling. Half-Life: Alyx leverages VR to deliver some of gaming's most unforgettable moments, especially in its final chapters. Accounting for all that, the GameSpot team recognizes it as our Game of the Year.

  • "It's very hard to play VR games that aren't Half-Life: Alyx." Yes. Yes. YES. Alyx made me buy a VR kit. My VR kit has been collecting dust ever since. There are almost no other VR games worth playing. Valve made something special, and it's hard to imagine anyone else coming close to it for at least another decade.

  • Gamespot

  • I think what made Alyx lacked the attention it deserves is that apart from it being exclusive to VR, it came out during one of the most devastating years humanity has ever witnessed. Such unfortunate timing.

  • Brilliant choice!

  • More than VR Game of the Year. More than Game of the Year. I upgraded my pc and bought a Rift S JUST for Alyx and it's totally awesome. It's one of the best games I've ever played.

  • LOL GAMESPOT.

  • A perfect game. If you have not played it and you get the chance, jump at it, it will blow your mind.

  • We can always say that every new game from Valve we'll be a masterpiece...just saying

  • Ejecting a clip does not make you lose the ammo in it. You can eject a single bullet, but any half-empty clip you drop can be picked up and put back in.

  • Unfortunate game. Amazing graphic, crazy engine, UNFORESEEN story and twists. But it buried because it's on VR

  • Super Mario bros 2

  • Oh god it is so good to see a VR game be GOTY for the first time. This game has been such a huge boost for the VR industry as a whole, and I'm so glad it's getting the kind of recognition that will compel even more people to invest in VR, which will in turn compel devs to start adding VR as an option to their games, or making whole games with VR in mind. This means more to me as someone who has yearned for VR ever since I could imagine what it would be like to be completely immersed in a game, since the days of the PS1, and games like Colony Wars, Doom, Rage Racer and Twisted Metal used to make me wonder what it would be like to see things from their perspective. Growing up as a lower-middle class American in the mid-west, opportunities to experience even the very oldest versions of VR were extremely limited, but I do remember one time when a local college brought in two Virtuality type VR stations, and my mom was able to get me and my brother and sister in to see them. My brother and I got to spend about 5 minutes trying to kill each other with pistols that shot arcing bullets, and the FOV was something like 45 degrees, if that not to mention the horrible lag between action and reaction. Butit was probably one of the most transformative experiences of my life. I began to imagine the possibilities. From then on my mental mantra was, "This would be SO much better in VR." And to this day, with any 3d game, and even some 2D games, I can't help thinking "This would be SO much better in VR." So thank you Valve for making this game (even though you messed up the left handed controls) and thanks Gamespot for making it Game of the Year despite it being a game that only a handful of people would be able to play.

  • Wow, that's a very bold choice GameSpot. And I LOVE it. I may not agree with you in terms of which game I spent the most time playing, but in retrospect Alyx was definitely the most memorable choice by a long shot. And now you've encouraged me to go finish it!

  • No offense to the other games this year but Half Life Alyx stands out, its a uniqie experience, and to top it off, its got 17 years of hype and is the third game of one of the most influential video game series of all time.

  • THIS IS UNFORESEEN CONSEQUENCE

  • A Much more deserving game in my opinion. Sure, not perfect compared to other games, but they took a risk by making it VR, but they went all in. It wasn’t some cheap tech demo, it was a full fledged beautiful experience. No other game this year has pushed forward quite like this one. I can’t imagine a way for Half-Life 3 to exist on desktop without being a big step down from what HL:Alyx has done.

  • "This guy gets it!" meme is more than deserved. 🙏🏽👌🏾

  • No, its a game of the century, when VR becomes common place everyone will remember this historic moment..

  • Valve launches a revolutionary game, in a revolutionary medium, under a franchise/moniker, known for making revolutionary stuff, and does not try to create crazy hype, as they are probably scared about living upto expectations

  • Well, at least one place got GOTY right. I can't believe how many publications and award shows are not giving HLA their GOTY (and my guess is because they haven't actually played it because it's VR).

  • i knew y'all were gonna drop a banger after those gun videos + the loadout series

  • This is bullshit.. obviously Cyberpunk deserves it

    • Uh.. maybe on PC, but even then..nah.

  • What? Why?

    • It set the bar for its medium, and brought a unique game experience that pushed gaming to new heights, and showed of what VR could do when given the AAA treatment. It was an excellent experience that will be unforgettable to me. Was so much more than just a great game.

  • Dood have hives?

  • Gamespot hates Sony. They rather die before they give Sony a GOTY. It doesn’t matter which year of this generation. They are ridiculous. Not in story, not in acting, not in gameplay, not in Soundtrack, not in anything was half life a Goty This year. It was a good VR game, end of story. But this are the people who thought Rdr2 is Goty material. Lol. A game where the best parts shine while you don’t use the controller 🙄. But I’m expecting nothing from a name which makes the most ridiculous reviews/ratings in the business. Not even finishing the games before making the reviews. And I’m a huge half life fan btw. Half life 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. This shows even more how ridiculous this all is^^.

  • Where is tf2 ? Lol sorry force of habit

  • The fact I can scroll for minutes before finding a negative review on Steam is a testament to how good this game is

  • AGREE

  • Usually GOTYs will ruin your enjoyment of other games.

  • *there are a lot games that came out this year....or there were a lot of games that came out this year....not there is a lot of good games.....

  • Yes!

  • The VGAs were high.

  • Cyberpunk 2077🙈

  • One day I'll be able to afford this game.

    • a Quest 2 costs only 299$

  • So happy for a VR game to win this important award!

  • I got an advert for Cyberpunk watching this. What’s funniest is I can’t even buy it, as I’m on PlayStation and they’ve removed it from the store.

  • VR represent!

  • I agree with u gamespot

  • Wait, i tough TLOU win game of the year.

  • Game of the year that most ppl can’t play lool

  • I LOVE Half Life: Alyx. It was an amazing experience, especially the first time through LIVING the story. You hit the nail on the head when you said its very hard to play any other VR games besides Alyx.

  • Please god tell valve to port this to PlayStation 5, and tell Sony to make a ps5 vr headset.

    • If ps5 VR is good enough then valve will give it /half-life alyx. Like in past valve release portal 2 to ps3/ps4 and xbox

  • I have been playing video games since I was 8 and I am almost 50...HL Alyx is the most immersive and mind blowing experience I have ever had.I am speechless after playing it for the first time this afternoon

  • Gamespot is the best ♥️

  • Erm cyberpunk 2077 that’s gotta be game of the year just for the laughs if nothing else

  • PC finally gets a fun game and they lose their minds.

    • PC has the largest gaming library there is. Lol Lots of fun games on it.

  • most expensive game, have to own 1000k vr and atleast 1k pc to play 60 euros game, but hell it is worth it... super amazing and cool, good pick, tnx for thay

  • Good choice gamespot. Kudos

  • I don't have PS4. So Last of us part 2 is no accessible enough for me. But I do have an Oculus Rift to play Real GoTY.

  • Too bad I didn’t get to experience it because of not having access to the hardware at the moment😓

  • someone knows their crap

  • Ronaldo!!!

  • That’s the game of the year? Really? 🤦‍♂️

  • I hope this masterpiece game comes to PSVR2 on PS5. It's the best way to be more accessible for million's of people and fans from the series.

    • Normally I like PC getting exclusives like this, but the game is so good I hope it comes to PS5 too, it needs to be played by more people.

  • Half Life Alyx and Cyberpunk 2077

  • this game is more tha GOTY. BEST VIDEO GAME EVER. I play and follow world of video games since 1997, i have played billions of games. Btw i play CyberPunk 2077. But Half Life Alyx is the best best best. Case closed till the HL3 will be released. ^^

  • Proud of you kurt!!! Ill never forget doing some crazy movie marathons at your dads apartment senior year high school

  • No complaints. Well deserved. Valve reminds me about what "apple" used to be: revolutionary company.

  • I see game of the year in the title, but I don’t see rust; nice clickbait

  • Finally, a reasonable game of the year!

  • Exactamente. Bravo.

  • I bet this game will be well appreciated by history. It really was a step forward in interactive entertainment, taking the videogame medium to the true next level. For obvious economic reasons this game is not accessible today, but once tech gets cheap, people will experience this revolutionary gameplay and realize how its launch was the moment where things turned for VR. It validated it.

  • Gamespot > the game award

  • VR game of like forever in my opinion, it's brilliant! My rig plays it fairly well and I am still slowly working my way through the game as I savour every moment. I will be building a new gaming pc in the new year and will be playing this from the start again. Quest 2 wirelessly of course.

  • 8:35

  • 6:20

  • 2:25

  • This game is proof that VR is here to stay. Man I wish they make a standalone port for the Quest 2 it would be epic. I played on my PC with the link cable but wish I could play it standalone

  • I mean I hate game journalists, but this is the one time I’ll make an exception compared to the game of the year

  • Pass

  • Deserved from the start

  • Steam store, where I can't buy their software games even I have the money let alone ordering their VR Headset.

  • This will tease a lot of people who have the money but can't buy vr headset. Stop hiding in the shadows vr and come out!!

  • What about Cyberbugs of the 2020 year?

  • Arguably a more important FPS than the HL2 series since it focuses so heavily on the VR capabilities of mechanics.

  • The game which majority of people haven't played won GOTY. Nice Joke.

    • Diesnt matter how manh people played it, it still deserves the award for what it is.

  • Be like Valve. Decide on the game's design. Work on it for 3.5 years. Playtest it. Take criticism from playtest. Implement changes. Announce it 5 months prior to its release. Finally release the game after 4 years of development.

  • Bruh i was shocked when this was not nominated in the Game Awards. The only game that pushed gaming forward this year didnt get nominated is bullshit

  • No game I have played ever, was going to surpass HL:A.. I don't understand how this game is not widely popular.. or even considered GOTY. This is a generation defining title. The future of narrative would be in VR..

  • NOT The Last of Us Part 2? Who are you and what have you done with the real Gamespot?

  • Why are the comments only from the privileged

    • it is unfortunate thatr VR is so expensive, but HTC, Oculus, HP, and Valve are working together to bring cheaper VR to consumers such as yourself who wish for a more affordable experience

  • Those new to VR should also try Lone Echo, on par with Half Lyf Alyx

  • To me this game is the real next-gen tittle

  • Very well deserved probably most advance game here

  • Respect

  • You guys made demons souls goty way back. You were ahead of the game then, and you're probably ahead of the game now. VR be the future bois

  • okay i forgive gamespot, time to re-subscribe

  • My HP Reverb G2 arrived a few weeks ago. Can't wait to experience this game!

  • Half-Life: Alyx is by far the easiest choice this year. However when people say it's ruined VR for everything else, that's just a lazy assumption. Just watch more VR game trailers, look at some ranked lists. There's a ton of amazing VR games even at a pretty high production value and scope close to Alyx.

    • Agreed

    • @laos85 For sure. I just mean for people who already have the equipment and are looking for games to play.

    • Most people can't get vr that'a the problem including myself

  • Unfortunately I know of too many people who say VR is a gimmick, they've never used it, can't afford, don't intend on getting it When I ask them why they think that they just echo what others say When I first tried VR at an IMAX VR arcade it wasn't even on my radar but after that experience I went straight home and bought a setup I made it a point to show all of my friends what it was like because VR is something you HAVE to experience "Half life Alyx was alright..I didn't play it, I watched my favorite streamer play it, but he didn't seem to think it was anything special." THATS NOT HOW IT WORKS VR IS AN EXPERIENCE You cant just watch someone else stream it and immediately understand what its like, that's the biggest struggle for VR.. getting people to realize just how good it can be It also still has the stigma of being too expensive even though it's really come down in price

  • It's nice to see something that actually pushes the medium forward win GOTY instead of some oscar bait bullshit like with the game awards

  • yes this is what it should be

  • These guys are true gamers

  • THANK YOU!!!! LETS FUCKING GOOOO!!!!🎊🎊🎊🎊

  • This game is not better than Ghost of Tsushima

    • I loved GoT, but it wasn't as innovative and game changing as HLA.

    • Are you actually played it?

  • Alyx is the best game, but this game is VR only

  • GameSpot out here getting fat Ws

  • Great pick! Yes, hardware limitations but very innovative & polished. Not like the other crap being picked for GOTY.

  • thank you thank you thank you thank you THANK YOU!
